Student Agenda & Responsibilities

WEB Program

WEB stands for “Where Everybody Belongs”. This is a dynamic middle school orientation and transition program that welcomes Grade 6 students and strives to help them feel more comfortable throughout their first year of middle school. WEB is built on the belief that students can help students succeed. The program trains Grade 8 students to become WEB Mentors who will foster positive connections with new Grade 6 students. As supportive role models, WEB Mentors guide the Grade 6 students to discover what it takes to be successful during the transition to middle school and help facilitate a sense of belonging and success. Applications to become a WEB Mentor are available in the Spring.

Breakfast/Lunch Program

A breakfast program for those in need will run every morning for students who wish to participate. There will be a minimal charge for the simple, balanced meal. A nutritious bag lunch will be provided for those in need of a lunch.

Band/Choir

Peter Ewart Middle offers a Jazz and Senior Band for students who have taken music instruction before and a Junior Band for those just starting. We also offer Vocal Choir.

Langley School District Code of Conduct

The Langley School District believes that everyone has the right to learn and work in a safe, caring, healthy and orderly environment.   All members of the school community are expected to maintain an attitude that is cooperative, courteous and respectful.  It is a shared responsibility to demonstrate positive conduct while attending any school or District related activity, regardless of time and location.

Respect Yourself– care about your learning and yourself

Some examples include:

  • make positive choices
  • be on time and prepared to learn and do your best
  • Be a positive contributor to the learning environment

Respect Others– be considerate of the personal feelings, space and belongings of others

Some examples include:

  • be polite, honest and communicate respectfully
  • be responsible for your actions
  • be respectful of personal and cultural diversity

Respect Property– respect the school’s environment

Some examples include:

  • treat school equipment with care
  • clean up after yourself and recycle
  • ask before borrowing property

Be Safe– follow school rules and expectations

Some examples include:

  • use appropriate hallway etiquette
  • report dangerous situations to staff
  • follow protocols for positive digital citizenship

All members of the school community are expected to comply with the purpose and spirit of the British Columbia Human Rights Code (Section 7 and 8), including not engaging in discriminatory conduct on the basis of race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, political beliefs, and age.

Discriminatory conduct includes publishing or displaying anything that could discriminate against another based on accommodation, service and facility, or expose them to contempt or ridicule, on the basis of the above grounds.

The Langley School District encourages positive conduct from all members of the school community.  It is not acceptable to directly or indirectly engage in behaviour that is considered:

  • dangerous, including fighting or assault (or play fighting)
  • discriminatory
  • disrespectful, rude or defiant
  • interfering with the learning environment
  • bullying (including cyberbullying), harassment, intimidation, threatening or violent
  • indirect involvement (bystander) in incidents of violence, bullying or harassment

  • possession, use, distribution of any illegal or restricted substances
  • illegal, including smoking on school property
  • misuse of technology and electronic devices

Forms of unacceptable conduct cited above are some examples and not an alI-inclusive list.

Consequences

School safety is paramount.  Consequences for behaviour not meeting the Code of Conduct will be applied in a manner that respects individual differences, age appropriateness and past conduct.  Whenever possible, incidents will be resolved by discussion, mediation, restorative action, restitution and if necessary, meetings with parents or guardians.  Every effort to support students, staff, parents and guardians, and to determine the root causes of behaviour will be made. While the District hopes that strategies are learning experiences, there are times where the following consequences may apply:

  • review of school and District expectations
  • loss of privileges (i.e. placement in an alternate setting, detention, modified schedule)
  • community service
  • consultation with School District Staff, RCMP, Fire Department and other community agencies
  • Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA)
  • suspension (for both students and staff)
  • in the case of students, expulsion
  • in the case of staff, termination
  • in the case of parents and guardians, application of Section 177 of the School Act

The consequences cited above are only examples and not an alI-inclusive list, and are not necessarily in progressive order.  Decisions of District staff are eligible for appeal in accordance with District Policy No. 1205 – Bylaws of the Board – Student/Parent Appeals

The Langley School District Code of Conduct supercedes all previous District and individual school’s Codes of Conduct in whatever form and has been structured to align with and adhere to the standards outlined in:

  • The School Act85(1.1) 168 (2) (s.1) Provincial Standards Ministerial Order 276/07, effective October 17, 2007

Peter Ewart Middle School Expectations

At Peter Ewart Middle School, we expect the best. We want our students to be able to empathize with others and have the moral courage to make the right decisions. We are confident our families will partner with us in using Restorative Action, where all adults in our school community establish and reinforce clear expectations.

If any students:

  1. a) bully, disrespect, interfere with, or endanger other students
  2. b) are disrespectful toward school buildings, property, and the property of others
  3. c) are disrespectful towards adults or peers
  4. d) refuse to comply with a directive from any adult staff member at a school (including teachers and teaching assistants, parents acting as chaperones or coaches, noon hour supervisors, etc.),

then they will be held accountable, and are subject to disciplinary consequences for their behaviour.

Bullying and Harassment

Bullying or harassment in any form will result in students being held accountable for their actions and words and being subject to school discipline. These two terms are defined as:

Bullying or harassment in any form will result in students being held accountable for their actions and words, and being subject to school discipline.

What is bullying? Simply put, bullying is a pattern of unwelcome or aggressive behaviour, often with the goal of making others uncomfortable, scared or hurt. It’s almost always used as a way of having control or power over their target, and it is often based on another person’s appearance, culture, race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity.

(From erasebullying.ca)

Harassment: is repeated incidents of bullying. Reports on school-occurring bullying or harassment should IMMEDIATELY come to administrators from students, eye-witnesses, parents or staff members. School District Policy #7200 provides forms and a process for victims or witnesses to report on the harassment, and put this report into a documented official complaint for investigation.

Closed Campus

Peter Ewart is a closed campus; that is, no one will be allowed to leave the school premises after arriving in the morning unless they have a note from a parent/guardian.

If visiting the school, all visitors must check in at the office upon entering.

Dress Code

Please refer to the School District #35 “Dress Guidelines” at     https://www.sd35.bc.ca/students-parents/district-code-of-conduct-dress-guidelines/#dress-guidelines

Snowballs

Snowballs may only be thrown in designated areas, at designated times, and under supervision.

Gum

Individual classroom teachers will determine if gum chewing is allowed in their classroom. Gum chewing will not be allowed in common areas such as hallways, the learning commons, gym, multipurpose or music rooms.

Language

Students will be expected to use proper language for a school, both inside the building and outside. Therefore swearing, disrespectful or racist language, either verbal or written, will not be tolerated at any time. Students may expect immediate consequences for use of improper language.

Lunchtime

We do not have a cafeteria, so students will eat lunch in their classroom, sitting at their desks. Proper inside behaviour will be expected at all times. After the eating period there will be activities such as clubs and intramurals. All other students will be expected to go outside for the duration of the lunch period.

Outside Days

All days are outside days; that is, students will go outside for recess and lunch play periods. Students must therefore come dressed for the weather each day. There are a variety of activities available for students to participate in during this time.

Personal Technology

There has been ongoing discussion around the use of personal technologies (Cellphones, iPads etc..). Our policy is that students must put away personal technology upon school entry and not to be used until the bell at the end of the day. Electronic devices will not be used during recess and lunch and will not be allowed outside during these times.

Individual teachers will set their own guidelines for usage in the classroom. Depending on the activity or assignment, this could change frequently. Cellphones are a useful tool. Students will be allowed to organize and record their homework electronically at the end of each period. Cellphones may be used much more extensively depending on their teacher’s classroom rules.

***We kindly ask parents to support our Personal Technology policy by contacting the school directly if you would like to contact your child during the school day***

 Physical Contact

‘Hands and feet to yourself’ will govern our behaviour. This means no tackle football, rough play or play fighting. A simple hug when greeting someone is acceptable, but displays of affection such as kissing or extended hugging are not.

Harmful Items

Students must not bring any kind of harmful or replica weapons items to school. These include lighters, any kind of knife, laser pointers, chemical substances, or any object that may be a danger to others, or could be considered a weapon. If a student accidentally brings any object like this to school, they must tell a staff member immediately. Parents may pick up the item later at the office.

The RCMP will be notified if a staff member feels that the incident is sufficiently serious.

Illness / Absence

It is always best to keep sick children home from school. This way they do not infect other children. However, sometimes children are recovering and no longer contagious. If this is the case, we ask that you please contact your child’s teacher.

Peter Ewart has an automated system where we contact the home of every student who is absent to inform parents of their child’s absence. You can help our wonderful administrative assistants by emailing the school at pemabsent@sd35.bc.ca and letting us know your child will be absent or late. If this is not an option, we ask that you phone the school at 778-***-****. This not only saves us from making an unnecessary call, but if there are students out there who need our help, it helps us identify them faster.

Paying for Extras

Many times during the year families will be asked to pay for extras around the school including: field trips, agendas, sports team, spirit wear, etc. In order to make this as easy as possible we have set up a system whereby parents can pay through School Cash Online as well as the traditional options of cheque or cash. All cash and cheque payments will only be handled by our office staff. Instructions for setting up School Cash Online are available on the school website https://pems.sd35.bc.ca.

Communication

Good communication between home and school is a critical factor in student success. Agendas are an excellent way to communicate with teachers, or families can phone the school (778-726-4815), email, or make an appointment to see a staff member. We welcome your involvement, and your suggestions.

Support for Students

Learning Commons:

Peter Ewart’s Learning Commons has a collection of print and non-print materials and technology resources.  In addition to library skills our Teacher Librarian cooperatively plans and teaches units with classroom teachers. The Teacher Librarian and the Learning Commons technician manage the Learning Commons, the internet and word-processing computers, provide lunch-hour access, and hold book exchanges with class divisions. More information about our Learning Commons is available on the school website.

School Counselors:

Peter Ewart has a school counselor. Students and parents are encouraged to call or leave a note requesting to see the counselor in order to address the social and emotional needs of the children.

 School Based Team (SBT):

Every month, the Resource/Learning Assistance teacher chairs a meeting of teachers and an administrator, plus School District support staff. Meetings are scheduled to discuss the needs of individual students, referred by teachers, and to brainstorm suggestions for their support.

English Language Learner Support (ELL):

ELL support teachers are provided to Peter Ewart to work with students for whom English is their second language.

Aboriginal Support Worker:

Our Aboriginal Support Worker will provide Aboriginal students with academic and cultural support.

Youth Care Worker

Our Youth Care Worker will assist both students and families with ways of coping with and correcting negative behaviours, making friends and acting positive.
